Shirley McAuliffe

Shirley McAuliffe (née LeMaistre; 1926 – July 26, 2021) was a Canadian public servant and granddaughter of Christena LeMaistre, dean of the Almonte Sisters.

Early Life

Shirley LeMaistre was born in 1926 in Almonte, Ontario, the daughter of John LeMaistre and Florence LeMaistre. Through her father, she was a granddaughter of Christena LeMaistre (née Chicken), the eldest and longest-lived of the Almonte Sisters.

She grew up with her sisters Grace and Jacqueline.

Marriage and Family

Shirley married Ivan McAuliffe, who predeceased her in 2003.

Career

Shirley enjoyed a successful career in the Canadian public service.

Later Life

Shirley and Ivan were active members of the Rivermead Golf Club in Ottawa and spent their winters in Florida.

Following Ivan's death in 2003, Shirley continued to live independently until she began experiencing symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. She spent her final seven years at New Orchard Lodge, a long-term care facility in Ottawa.

Death

Shirley died on July 26, 2021, in her 95th year, following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. A virtual memorial service was held on August 21, 2021.

On July 26, 2021, in her 95th year [born 1927], Shirley McAuliffe (née LeMaistre) peacefully passed away after a very long and heartbreaking mental and physical decline due to Alzheimer's. Beloved wife of the late Ivan McAuliffe (2003) and the daughter of the late John and Florence LeMaistre of Almonte, Ontario.

Shirley was a loving mother to her daughters, Nancy (Robert Cormier), the late Joanne Seymour (2020) and special daughter Adele (Jim Wallace). She loved and was loved by her grandchildren Shane Warner (Jennifer Routliffe), Jordan Warner (Krista Balenko), Auzsha Apps, Dustin Seymour (Mendara Chan), and great grandchildren Evan, Elle and Shea Warner, Violet and Lincoln Seymour. Sister of Grace Nelson and Jacqueline Brunelle.

Shirley enjoyed a very successful career in the public service and until she began her battle with Alzheimer's had a happy life with Ivan and the girls, their spouses and grandchildren. Shirley and Ivan were active members of the Rivermead Golf Club and spent their winters in Florida.
