Michael James "Jim" Grant (7 September 1959 - 6 June 2016) was an investor, analyst, science fiction fan, dance enthusiast, and bon vivant who spent his final years cultivating an extensive and eclectic group of friends in Calgary, Alberta.

Early life

Grant was born in Montreal, Quebec on 7 September 1959.

He had two sisters, Cathie (Jack) Lautenschlager of Kitchener, Ontario and Julie Plante of Kingston, Ontario.

Later life

He moved to Calgary, Alberta later in life.

Jim was very active in the Calgary salsa dancing community for a number of years, from at least 2007 to his death. His obituary noted his "genuine love for life, travelling, skiing and sharing this joy with those around him."

He was known for hosting joyful dinner parties for friends and developed a reputation for designing delicious beverages for his guests, particularly a variation of the chocolate martini.

As a former pilot Jim had a keen interest and understanding of flight. Even in his post 50 life time he engaged in an extreme flying adventure in Las Vegas over the Nevada desert.

As a philosopher Jim attended numerous local discussion groups where he would partake in lively debates on a variety of subjects. Jim was not shy to voice opinion and had many such opinions on most subjects.

Death

He died suddenly at his home on Monday 6 June 2016.

His funeral was held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. Michael Currie, his friend since January 2007, was present.

Obituary

June 6, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta Jim Grant of Calgary passed away suddenly at his home on Monday, June 6, 2016 at the age of 56 years. Jim will be forever missed by his loving sisters, Cathie (Jack) Lautenschlager of Kitchener, ON and Julie Plante of Kingston, ON; his stepdaughter Korë and her son Marcus; and his many nieces, nephews and friends. Jim was very active in the Calgary Salsa Community for a number of years. He had a genuine love for life, travelling, skiing and sharing this joy with those around him. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) today, June 10, 2016 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In living memory of Jim Grant, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
