He has at least nine biological descendants, and 11 step-descendants.
Family
With his first wife he had three children:
- Douglas Russell Hermiston, Junior (born 17 December 1961 in Germany)
- Kimberley Leeanne "Kim" Hermiston (born 27 April 1963 in Germany)
- Sean Allan "Hermy" Hermiston (born 5 June 1970 in Winnipeg)
Later, in the 1980s he married Marilyn Currie. Marilyn did not adopt his three children because Doug's first wife remained a significant part of their lives.

- Shaun Frederick Moffatt (born 12 September 1973)
Grandchildren and beyond
Doug Hermiston has three biological children, and at least six biological grandchildren from Sean:
- Katie Hermiston
- Jamie Hermiston

- Seanie Hermiston, and at least two others.
Through daughter Kim Hupé, and step-daughter Shar Telles-Langdon, he also has four step-grandchildren:
Thanks to Troy, he also has five step-great-grandchildren (two of which are separated by two "steps" since they are not Troy's biological children either):
